Managing Extrinsic Costs via Multimodal Natural Interaction Systems

چکیده
Modern day interactions, whether between remote humans or humans and computers, involve extrinsic costs to the participants. Extrinsic costs are activities that, although unrelated to a person’s primary task, must be accomplished to complete the primary task. In this paper we provide a framework for discussing certain extrinsic costs by describing those we term over-specification, repetition, and interruption. Natural interaction systems seek to reduce or eliminate these costs by leveraging peoples’ innate communication abilities. However, in conceiving these interfaces, it’s critical to acknowledge that humans are naturally multimodal communicators, using speech, gesture, body position, gaze, writing, etc., to share information and intent. By recognizing and taking advantage of humans’ innate ability to communicate multimodally, extrinsic interaction costs can be reduced or eliminated. In this paper we review previous and ongoing work that demonstrates how multimodal interfaces can reduce extrinsic costs. Author

SOLVING BEST PATH PROBLEM ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS WITH FUZZY COSTS
Numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the shortest-pathproblem; many of them consider a single-mode network and crispcosts. Other attempts have addressed the problem of fuzzy costs ina single-mode network, the so-called fuzzy shortest-path problem(FSPP). The main contribution of the present work is to solve theoptimum path problem in a multimodal transportation network, inwhich the co...
متن کاملOn Multimodal Route Navigation in Pdas
One of the biggest obstacles in building versatile natural human-computer interaction systems is that the recognition of natural speech is still not sufficiently robust, especially in mobile situations where it's almost impossible to cancel out all irrelevant auditory information. In multimodal systems the possibility to disambiguate between several input and output modalities can substantially...
متن کاملAn Approach for Managing Ambiguities in Multimodal Interaction
Multimodal systems support people with different needs and different features during the interaction process making it more easy and natural. However naturalness can usually produce ambiguous interpretation. This paper discusses ambiguities in multimodal interaction proposing in particular two different examples of ambiguities: a) multimodal ambiguities produced combining un-ambiguous modal inf...
متن کاملGeneration Learning by Reading System
Learning by reading is an important scientific problem because it requires modeling a wide range of human abilities. It also could break the knowledge engineering bottleneck, enabling the bootstrapping of intelligent systems via interaction with people using natural language. This paper outlines our progress on creating a 2 generation learning by reading system, focusing on three main areas: Mu...

Dialog applications for managing calendars have been developed for every generation of dialog systems research (Heidorn, 1978; Yankelovich, 1994; Constantinides and others, 1998; Horvitz and Paek, 2000; Vo and Wood, 1996; Huang and others, 2001). Today, Web-based calendar applications are widely used. A spoken dialog interface to a Web-based calendar application permits convenient use of the sy...
